The "Pearl of the Orient" will couple with the "Big Apple" for a concert under the stars tonight.

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra (SSO), conducted by Yu Long and accompanied by internationally acclaimed Chinese pianist Lang Lang, will share the stage with the New York Philharmonic (NYP), conducted by Andrey Boreyko, live from Central Park.

The concert is the opening for the 2010 New York Philharmonic's "Concerts in the Parks" series.

The concert will be broadcast on Shanghai Dragon TV tomorrow at 11 pm and on the Art Channel of the Shanghai Television and Radio Station (STR) on Friday at 6:30 pm.

The shared concert is in honor of the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai and New York City naming Shanghai as a "sister city."

Every summer since 1965, the NYP has offered free performances at parks in New York City and New Jersey to bring classical music to the public, and since their start, the performances have delighted more than 14 million listeners, including over 148,000 last summer alone.

According to Zarin Mehta, the president and executive director of the NYP, this will be the first time the NYP has shared the stage in Central Park.

"It is also partly in celebration of the Shanghai Expo," Mehta said.

"The 'Concerts in the Parks' is one of the true delights of summer in New York, and we are proud to be visiting each of the boroughs with free concerts this sum-mer, continuing this time-honored tradition of bringing great music to the people of the city."

The NYP's last performance in Shanghai was on their 2008 Asia tour, which was followed by the orchestra's historic concert in Pyongyang, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
