"Because the scene is so small in Shanghai it was brilliant of Xing Zhao, who manages events at the café, to take a risk and say, 'We have never done this here before, but let's see how it goes,'" said Michaels.

As well as sporadic literary events, the café also runs a film night every Thursday which screens interesting, non-mainstream pieces.

The schedule for the rest of this month includes the Spanish comedy Torremolinos 73 (2003) on July 22 and Tsai Ming- Liang's Visage (2009) on July 29. The café is also starting a DVD swapping program at its film nights.

Xing, told the Global Times that he welcomes suggestions for possible films to screen.

"If you have something that you want to share and can give a short introduction to why the film is meaningful for you, it makes the evening much more intimate and personal."

Michaels' second Shanghai performance will be at The Glamour Bar at 4 pm, August 1.
