Three Oranges' Love is the second production of Meng's five-year musical project.

The first production of the project Murder in the Hanging Garden, a musical mystery discussing "murder, death and people losing themselves in this ridiculous society," was performed 100 times last year and was well-received.

Three Oranges' Love's premiere in Beijing evoked some mild controversy. Some Chinese critics felt the new work was disappointing.

"It is not a musical in a strict sense because the music was used only as background or bridge instead of playing a leading role in the storytelling," wrote a critic in the Beijing Youth Daily.

"Meng is good at making musicals but he needs more time to practice and some more creative ideas."

Meng plans to have staged 100 performances of this show by the end of the year.

Shanghai fans will be waiting to see the musical - Meng has been drastically reworking the production since its opening in Beijing.
