"What can be used to control our ever-growing desires? That's the question I hope audiences will think about after seeing the play," said He. Most of his works to date have focused on relationships between the sexes.

Unlike his previous works, audiences will find familiar experiences in this play, he said.

The idea of the play came from a Japanese comic bestseller The Capital which was published at the end of 2008 when the world was struggling with the financial crisis.

The comic explained the essence of Marx's work by telling the story of a greedy cheese factory owner chasing profits by brutal and unethical means.

Playwright Yu Rongjun studied different versions of Marx's Das Kapital, including the comic book and the production team has been consulting professionals in the finance industry to get a better understanding of their world.

"Das Kapital is about more than making audiences laugh," said the director. "I hope audiences will get a better understanding of Marx's theories and reflect on their own lives."
