Playing the key role of Brunnhilde is British soprano Catherine Foster, a UK soprano who has won critical praise for her interpretation of the role - in June this year in a performance at the Cologne Opera House she was given a 17-minute standing ovation by an enraptured audi-ence.
In Shanghai other major roles will be sung by leading European performers including Astrid Weber, Dalia Schaech-ter, Hilke Andersen, Greer Grimsley and Stig Andersen.
Performing since 1857
The orchestra will be the famous Gürzenich Orchestra Kön, named after Cologne's historical Gürzenich ballroom. It began performing in 1857 and since 1986, has been based in Cologne.
The Gürzenich has premiered several major works including Brahms' Double Concerto, Mahlers' 5th Symphony and Strauss' Till Eulenspiegel. The conductor is Markus Stenz.
The Ring Cycle in Shanghai will be sung in German with Chinese and Eng-lish subtitles. The Chinese version was translated by Yan Yichang, the director of the Wagner Association in Taiwan. His translation is regarded as the most au-thoritative version by the Wagner family.
