We do the math

Good news for local food lovers is that the number of high-end Chinese restaurants is up from May, with the Whampoa Club and Wan Hao Chinese Restaurant among a number of new additions.

"We've noticed that the kind of international restaurants that once only attracted expats are now increasingly attracting Chinese customers," said Bierman. "And now we're offering more Chinese restaurant choices, because we also want to interest local diners."

Ordinarily, dinner at the Whampoa Club costs an average of 600 yuan per person, typical for a high-end Bund destination. And by taking part in the offer a whopping saving of around 725 yuan per couple is possible.

For more home-style comfort food, savings of around 260 yuan per person are available at JW's California Grill on Nanjing Road West. An average starter, main and dessert normally comes in at around 600 yuan per person

Deal, or no deal?

At Hamilton House an average three-course dinner will set you back around 300 yuan, meaning that if you go to the trouble of booking a table online you will save yourself a grand total of 62 yuan. Notwithstanding, HH's fresh cod is already legendary, and the kitchen's French onion soup is probably the best in town.

And at Nougatine the offers begins to look even less of a bargain where, at an average cost of 250 yuan for dinner, you'll just be able to pay the taxi fare (one way) with the money saved. If you're still tempted we recommend the Hand Cut Beef Tartar with Fries, Roasted Chicken, or Jean-Georges Chocolate Cake with Vanilla Ice Cream.

Indian favorite, Vedas, is perhaps the most bizarre inclusion of all. A three-course dinner (and we've included the menu's more expensive choices) will run to no more than 180 yuan per person. But then again, some diners may think a 60 yuan surcharge is money well spent to be able to say you've participated in Shanghai Restaurant Week.
