However, Huang Xiaohong, senior engineer with Shanghai Lightning Protection Center, which participated in lightning prevention for the Expo Park, said he felt annoyed at the groundless reports.
He added that the local media's report was also mistaken in claiming that it is dangerous for visitors to lean against steel pillars inside pavilions during thundery weather.
"Most pavilions are equipped with a system to divert lightning strikes. Those that lack the system are required to keep their steel pillars out of the reach of visitors," Huang told the Global Times Monday.
As for the steel cables of the Sun Valley structure at Expo Park Gate No.6, the most obvious steel structure within the reach of visitors, Huang said there is a sign clearly telling people not to lean against the construction on thundery days.
"The structure is covered by insulating material, but as an added precaution we recommend that people keep clear of it," added Huang.
