Through mediation the Expo tribunal has resolved 13 of the 14 cases it has taken on since the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai opened.
Shangahi Pudong New Area People's Court, which inaugurated the Expo tribunal on May 25 to deal with civil and commercial disputes related to the six-month event, said that plaintiffs withdrew the 13 cases following mediation, but declined to provide details on the case that went to trial.
Most of the cases handled by the Expo tribunal concerned disputes encountered during the construction of pavilions inside the Expo Park, including the China Pavilion, said Chen Xueming, vice president of the court in Pudong.
The China Pavilion case was resolved Thursday with help from the Expo tribunal, with Shanghai Jinbo Stone Construction Company, one of the constructors of the structure, agreeing to pay 60,000 yuan ($8,857). The construction company agreed to the give the money to Shanghai Shuangchen Construction Material Company to make amends for failing to return materials to them after the framework of the pavilion was completed.
Another case eventually succeeded in getting the employer of a construction worker at the Saudi Arabia Pavilion to compensate him 135,000 yuan ($19,929). He had suffered injuries to his spleen while decorating the structure.
