Student dies following stabbing by schoolmate

A 14-year-old middle school student was stabbed to death by a schoolmate Tuesday morning near the gate to their school on Laiyang Road in Pudong New Area.

The incident took place in front of a convenience store near Gaoqiao Experimental Middle School affiliated to Shanghai Normal University at around 7am. The victim, surnamed Ling, was taken to Shanghai No.7 Hospital, but later died of his injury. A 13-year-old boy, surnamed Feng, is currently being held by police in relation to the incident.

"At first, I thought it was just a small fight between boys," a passerby surnamed Huang told Xinmin.cn. "I saw one of them chasing another one, then the former fell down, bleeding, with a fruit knife lying beside him."

Ji Xiaoyi, a press officer for Public Security Sub-Bureau of Pudong, told the Global Times Tuesday that the reason for the altercation was still under investigation.

Both boys attended the school, but were not classmates.

A security guard at the school told the Global Times Tuesday that the school's management and staff were rejecting interview requests.
