Two-party jury could overrule judge

According to a court stenographer, who spoke with the Global Times on the condition of anonymity, local residents commonly take advantage of the one-member jury system.

"We have some jurors who participate in more than 20 cases a month and receive up to 2,000 yuan ($292) altogether in some cases," he said.

Since last year, 176 cases that were first judged at the Shanghai No.1 Intermediate People's Court involved a jury, accounting for some 12 percent of all its cases.
