"While a small number of people managed to muddle through the application procedure, they were soon detected by our 24-hour monitoring system for their abnormal consumption behavior," he said. "The ID card information they provided in most cases belonged to people they knew such as friends and colleagues."

Meanwhile, computer experts said that while the Internet is host to a slew of software programs and applications that put information privacy at risk for individuals, such practices will only continue unless people start taking action to reverse the situation.

"People love to complain, but without doing anything about the situation like reporting it to the police, there is no hope for improvement, or in finding an effective solution to such problems," Lu Gang, who runs a locally based software website, told the Global Times Tuesday.

Gang added that even sending reports to Internet Content Providers can help as such cases are supposed to be relayed to officers in charge of online policing.
