According to Zhang Guihong, another professor of international relations at Fudan University, while the case may be an isolated one, the reality of the situation is that it may take some time for Chinese people to detach their subconscious from thinking negatively about the Philippines.

A Filipino maid working for a Shanghai family that holds Hong Kong ID cards said that she is worried Chinese people may unfairly take their anger out on her and her fellow compatriots.

"We're innocent," she told the Global Times Wednesday. "We have nothing to do with the police in the Philippines.

"There are bad people everywhere, and bad people do bad things regardless of their nationality," she added. "We shouldn't be blamed for a horrible crime that we had nothing to do with."

As coverage of the tragedy continues to make national headlines, a British woman living in the city said that people should keep an open mind on the matter.

"We must be careful not to blame our Filipino neighbors for this," she told the Global Times Wednesday. "This terrible act was only the fault of a single man, not an entire country."
