"Our goal at the World Expo 2010 in Shanghai is to raise public awareness of this," he said. "The system has helped our city optimize the use of resources, alleviate traffic congestion, and in a larger sense, benefit the environment."

Glotz-Richter said that Shanghai will need approximately 160 car sharing rental locations with some 6,400 vehicles will be needed to satisfy the needs of some 400,000 private car owners.

One American, who lives in Shanghai, said that he recently took the municipal test to transfer the validity of his US driver's license to China because he is thinking of buying a car.

"But I really don't need a vehicle all the time," the 35-year-old, who preferred not to be named, told the Global Times Thursday. "If I can rent a car for only 20-something yuan an hour, I'd much rather do that."

According to Li Keping, a professor at the Traffic and Transport School of Tongji University, a car sharing rental system could aid in the relief of mounting pressures caused by having more than 700,000 private cars on city roads.

"If used effectively, this has the ability to help reduce the number of drivers and parking issues, and eventually solve the congestion problems the city faces," he told the Global Times Thursday.
