More than 800 vessels passed through Yangshan Deep-Water Port in August, making it the busiest month in the port's history.

According to the Frontier Inspection Office at Yangshan Port, 802 vessels passed through the port last month, up 32 percent compared to the same month in 2009 and up 7.9 percent on July's figures. On average, 26 vessels passed through the port each day, while August 24 saw the peak of 37 on a single day, another record.

The number of passengers and crew passing through the port's inspection station also hit a new monthly high of 18,009 for August, up 30.6 percent year-on-year and up 7.6 percent month-on-month. It was the first month that the figure exceeded 18,000.

Authorities said that the reason for the increase in both vessels and people flow was due  to the relatively fine weather in August, as no typhoons affected the port, China News Service reported Saturday.

The report added that the opening of more routes to overseas destinations and recovery of the international shipping industry also contributed to the record-high figures for the month.

Yangshan Deep-Water Port is situated on Hangzhou Bay. It officially began operation on December 10, 2005. It is a major port belonging to Shanghai International Port Group.
