Global Times: What does the US’s putting more importance on China stand for? What influence it will bring to the relations between China and other countries?
Tao: With the US putting more emphasis on China means the asymmetry is decreasing. American people used to believe that China asked more from the US, but now nobody says this. China’s development and increased strength forces the US to pay more attention to China. An important change in the international situation is the “improved” global status of China. It is not because China wants to get something out of it, but because of its outstanding performance in the financial crisis. Therefore, Sino-US relations are based on a bilateral balance, which can normalize communications, mutual consultation and cooperation.
The changes in Sino-US relations will affect neighboring countries. The impacts brought on by the rise of a big country with a population of 1.3 billion are also beyond our own imagination. It is quite natural for neighboring countries to worry about this. We should understand their concerns as long as they are not hostile to China.
