Global Times: The overall gap between China and the US is getting smaller. Do you think the two countries will have more strategic conflicts than strategic cooperation? Do you think the two countries will create a new mode that will constrain conflicts effectively?

Shen: My answer is that it could be both. China is in the stage of hiding its capacity. There will be no big conflict between the two. But China will be stronger in the future, if the US knows which way the wind blows, it should not challenge China on the Taiwan issue and then the two countries could rule out armed conflict. If the US still keeps challenging China with its declining situation, there might be conflicts between the two. We can say that China and the US could cooperate in many fields, but the bilateral relationship is still complicated.
