Global Times: You wrote in an article in 2008 that “the greatest prospect of a destabilizing incident lies in the Taiwan Strait.” Do you still think so?

Nye: I think the situation has improved in the last year. I think the government of Ma Ying-jeou replacing the government of Chen Shui-bian has made the situation more stable than it was before. But there is still always the danger that one or the other side may misinterpret events and that could lead to a destabilizing incident.
