Dr Thomas Fingar, Payne Distinguished Lecturer, Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies, Stanford University
Global Times: Barack Obama is the first US president to visit China in the first year of his term. High-level officials from both sides have interacted frequently in this year. Do you think it means that the US’ policy on China has changed? Is it Obama’s expedient measures due to the financial crisis?
Fingar: China has changed. I am delighted that Obama’s coming for the series of meetings he’s got in the region. But there would be a lot more on his agenda than the financial crisis. You know, climate change, North Korea, Iran, and, I would assume, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. So there is a wide range of issues.
