Global Times: From the Europe perspective, what does the US’s putting more importance on China stand for? What influence it will bring to China-Europe relations? Will Europe adjust its foreign policy according to the development of the current Sino-US relationship? If so, what is the adjustment?
Kuhn: European foreign policy may gain profile, strength and support in Europe itself if US-China bilateral talks and foreign policies do not attach sufficient priority to major challenges of world politics, especially climate change but also human rights issues. However, China is less likely than the US to lose out in terms of political influence in world politics when Europe sharpens its green foreign policy profile before the Copenhagen summit. A US provocation of Europe will have repercussions on the US. Some European countries may soon back out of Afghanistan as public opinion on the military partnership with the US in Afghanistan is becoming more and more negative.
