Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China, University of Oxford, UK
Global Times: Which following aspects do you think Obama will push China on during his term? Trade, exchange rate, climate change, Taiwan issue, Tibet issue, Xinjiang issue or human rights?
Mitter: Issues like trade, exchange rate and climate change are of great importance to America’s politics. America’s domestic high unemployment rate is the most urgent problem to the Obama administration, so he needs to focus on relevant issues.
Issues like Taiwan, Tibet, Xinjiang and human rights – I don’t think he’s not talking about those issues at all, but I think he won’t mention them a lot.
I’m not saying such topics are meaningless. They are important and meaningful, but you’re asking me if Obama is going to talk about them and I don’t think he’ll highlight them.
