On February 22, 1972, Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai held talks with US President Richard Nixon at Great Hall of the People in Beijing and discussed the issue of normalizing China-US relations and other challenges. Zhou said, “The Taiwan question is the key to normalizing bilateral ties.” Nixon replied, “There is only one China in the world and Taiwan is part of China.”
