Chen Xinmei, a volunteer who taught in local schools in Yushu for two years, said the quake-hit area is in desperate need of basic medicine, such as anti-inflammatory drugs and band-aids, the Beijing News reported.

Chen arrived at 9 pm in the evening on April 14, and immediately began helping with the rescue effort at the National Normal School in Yushu. She told the Beijing News that because of the lack of equipment, it is very difficult to find people trapped in the rubble. Also, basic medicine and medical equipment, such as saline water, glucose, anti-inflammatory drugs, masks and band-aids are scarce.

According to Chen, no students were found in the No. 1 Wanquan Primary School, the No. 2 National Middle School, and Huaide Relief School in Yushu as of noon on April 15. But two teachers from the No. 2 National Middle School in Yushu died in the quake, and there are several students who suffered leg fractures.
