One person was killed in an accident that involved more than 200 vehicles Wednesday morning on Zhengxin Yellow River Bridge in Zhengzhou, Central China's Henan Province, due to heavy fog; the rescue work is underway and the bridge has resumed normal operation so far, according to the Zhengzhou traffic police on Wednesday.
At around 7:40 am on Wednesday morning, the bridge was hit by a heavy fog that caused multiple vehicles crashing on the side from Xinxiang to Zhengzhou on the bridge, leading to the death of one person, Zhengzhou traffic police said via its official Weibo account.
After the accident, staff from all the relevant departments including traffic, emergency response, health commission rushed to the scene to rescue the trapped residents. At least 11 fire engines and 66 fire rescue personnel were dispatched to the scene promptly, according to media reports.
The Global Times reporter reached the Zhengzhou emergency management bureau on Wednesday and the working staff said there's no updated information so far.
A person surnamed Zhang who was at the scene told Xiaoxiang Morning Herald on Wednesday that he was there in the morning and the accident caused three or four kilometers of traffic jams, and the crash was estimated to have involved hundreds of cars. "It was foggy this morning, there was water on the bridge and it was slippery, and now the vehicles were coming out one after another," Zhang said around noon.
Earlier on Wednesday the local traffic released a notice to remind all the drivers to be cautious in driving during foggy day, and advised drivers to slow down and turn on fog lamp and double flash lamp in time to keep a safe distance with other vehicles.
The local traffic authorities have suspended the transportation through the bridge after the accident. According to media reports, as of 9:30 am, a total of 11 residents trapped were rescued, while as of 10:55 am, four vehicles have been transported away and other vehicles which were able to work again were driving away from the scene. The rescue operation was carried out in an orderly manner.
