Ai admitted his methods of investigation are “far from systematic or scientific” and that the list will almost certainly never be completed, because “no one can ever know” what happened to all of the people who were buried.

“It would be much better to have an open and trusted professional organization deal with it,” he said.

But, at least for now, he knows that is not going to happen, so he feels morally obliged to do the job himself.

“The investigation will go on as long as I live. I’ve been disappointed many times and by many things, but nothing can stop us.”

Xu Zhiyong, a lecturer at the Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, said, “It would take a lot of time and effort for the government to collect the names of the students who died in the earthquake, not to mention lots of volunteers.

“But the process of searching is very meaningful because the public is seeking the truth and asking for those associated with the tofu dregs to take legal responsibility.”
