Some 100 middle-aged women, known as dama, a slightly derogatory Chinese term of endearment that literally means 'big mama', in South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region are wearing headphones during the dances in a public square to avoid disturbing local residents.
Chinese dama are sometimes viewed as a nuisance to quite-loving neighbors who don't appreciate the music accompanying the women's dances.
The damas wearing headphones are seen dancing in a video posted by Pear Video on Wednesday.
They sometimes twist their bodies, sometimes stamp their feet and clap their hands, without any music being heard.
"We used to play music but received complaints from neighbors when the music was a bit loud, but when we turned down the music we couldn't hear it," Yang Xujuan, the dance leader told the Pear Video.
Another dama dancer said residents of the nearby high-rise had even thrown water on them because of the loud music.
As many people are stressed and tired after work, the dama said they wanted to create a more peaceful environment, so they decided to dance in silence using music on their headphones to guide their steps.
"They dance in better rhythm while wearing the headphones," Yang's daughter said.
"It's great! They don't disturb us," said a citizen.
