A devious thief with a good memory from Jiamusi, Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province allegedly stole 100,000 yuan ($14,221) from a local fruit shop where he had worked ten years before and had surreptitiously memorized the combination to the shop's safe and duplicated its key.
It could have been a perfect crime if he hadn't started splashing the money around, local police officer Li Yunlong said in a video posted by Pear Video on Monday. Surveillance video from inside the mall shows a man climbing into the shop, and then a street camera apparently shows the man heading straight to an ATM.
The suspect's first mistake was making a large deposit at the ATM where the machine's camera captured his image, Li said, suggesting the man had no wherewithal to be in possession of so much cash.
The man was then tracked spending more than 30,000 yuan on webcam models doing live broadcasts, said Li.
The police arrested the man on November 17 and are still investigating the case.
The video has been viewed over 460,000 times as of Wednesday.
"The thief is definitely a smart guy with a good memory. Too bad he used his talent in a wrong way," said one netizen.
"Why did he wait 10 years?" another netizen asked.
