December 30 is the day before New Year's Eve and also the 25th birthday of Kim Tae-hyung, a member of South Korean boy band BTS, who is also known by his stage name "V." With over 1.5 million followers on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo, Baidu Kim Tae-hyung bar, the largest Chinese fan club supporting Kim, claims to have raised over 3.35 million yuan ($480,000) to celebrate their idol's birthday.

Electronic billboards all over China are displaying their birthday blessings to the pleasure of CARMYs (ARMY is a nickname for BTS's fans and CARMY refers to Chinese fans) and promoting Kim's name. Whether it's in the high altitudes of Lhasa in the Tibet Autonomous Region, as far south as Nanning, capital city of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, or in Shenyang, a large city in Northeast China, a CARMY can have a joyful and proud appreciation of his or her idol screening on a billboard in their local area.

With such large funds, Chinese fans are also trying to promote their idols around the world and in increasingly innovative ways. They are trying every way possible, such as broadcasting Kim's promotional videos on Asiana Airlines' planes and sponsoring Seoul Christmas and New Year celebrations in cooperation with the Seoul municipal government.

A 23-year-old CARMY, who is a university student and wants to remain anonymous, told the Global Times that she usually takes part in fan activities in Changsha, capital city of Central China's Hunan Province, where she lives. Talking about the large amount of money Chinese fans are said to have raised, she believes that it's an understandable choice for individual fans and large sums can be raised when many fans are more than happy to do so.
