Chinese police are investigating a case in which a Nigerian man who tested positive for COVID-19 refused to undergo medical quarantine and assaulted a nurse, beating her and biting her face.
The case has caused great uproar on Chinese internet, with many calling for the man to be deported.
The 47-year-old Nigerian man, named Okonkwonwoye Chika Patrick, arrived at Guangzhou, Guangdong Province from overseas on March 20 and was tested positive for coronavirus. He was sent to a hospital for treatment on March 23.
However, he refused to undergo medical tests and tried to escape from his quarantine ward in a hospital on Wednesday.
He then assaulted a nurse who tried to stop him, pushing her to the ground, beating her and even biting her face. A forensic examination found that she sustained injuries to her face, neck and waist.
Police said they have strengthened security in and around the hospital, and the suspect is undergoing quarantine and treatment under police supervision. The case will be dealt severely with after his recovery.
The government of East China’s Qingdao in Shandong Province also announced on Thursday that they are investigating a case in which three foreigners were allegedly found to be queue-jumping during a coronavirus test. The incident has also caused great dissatisfaction among Chinese Internet users.
“We will treat all Chinese and foreigners alike and act in accordance with the law and regulations,” said Qingdao’s regulator through Twitter-like Sina Weibo.
Many netizens expressed their support for the authorities of Guangzhou and Qingdao, saying foreigners who felt superior and failed to respect rules amid the battle against the coronavirus are not welcome.
