A woman from East China's Shandong Province tried to give her ex-boyfriend a taste of what she went through days after they broke up — by sending him a tonne of onions.

The woman surnamed Zhao, who lives in Zibo, cried for three days after her boyfriend asked for a break-up. Wanting her boyfriend to remember how heartbroken she was, she bought a tonne of red onions online and sent it to him.

Zhao told the seller that if they failed to contact the recipient, they could dump the onions outside his door. She also asked the seller to attach a message: "Ex! You made me cry for three days, now it's your turn!"

"We were in a relationship for more than a year and I don't want him to just let it go," Zhao told local news portal sdchina.com, adding she could afford the cheap onions and she needed to vent her emotions.

The delivery person failed to contact Zhao's boyfriend, and had to leave the bags of onions outside his apartment. It took about five hours to move all the onions from the delivery truck to the man's door.

"Is a man who doesn't cry after breaking up necessarily a bad person?" Zhao's ex-boyfriend asked when reached by media.

One neighbor was upset at the gesture. "I don't know whether the young man cried in the end, but I'm crying. The smell of onions wafted through the whole residential compound!"
