Two girls recently allegedly stole more than 50 mobile phones from a local store's safe in Liyang, East China's Jiangsu Province, after guessing its combination almost immediately.
The two suspects arrived at the store at night, with one wearing a black hoodie and the other in a white one, according to a surveillance video posted by Knews on Sina Weibo Saturday.
According to the footage, the suspects, who turned out to be two young girls, first smashed the cash register counter and took the money from it, and then found the safe key and managed to guess the code.
"The safe code was too easy to guess, and it didn't take much effort for them to get it," a local police officer surnamed Zhou said in the video. "The store owner might have never thought his stuff could be stolen from the safe."
"Besides 53 mobile phones from the safe, they also took 3,000 yuan [$429] in cash from the counter," said Zhou.
Police later caught the two girls in Jiangsu's Taizhou after they fled to their hometown following the theft, says the video.
The video noted that the suspects had no formal jobs, and found that Liyang had a large number of mobile phone stores through the help of a map app.
Police have taken criminal measures against the suspects, and the case is under further investigation.
The video drew widespread attention on the Chinese internet and had been viewed more than 500,000 times as of Monday. Many netizens commented under the post that they wondered what the actual code was.
"I am really curious about the safe code and want to know how simple it was," said one.
"It must have been either 123456 or 000000," another joked.
