China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) announced Tuesday that the company’s chairman Chen Fenjian passed away on Sunday. At present, CRCC’s production and operations are continuing as normal.

The confirmation came after media reported that Chen committed suicide by jumping from a building. As the news of his death spread online, CRCC delivered an official confirmation of his death via a statement on its official website on Tuesday. They did not mention the cause of death in the statement.

A source with the CRCC told to the Global Times on Tuesday that public security bureau has launched an investigation over the case.

“All cases shall be subject to the investigation of the public security organ, we suggest the public not to make random guess,” he said.

“The company expresses its deep condolences on his death,” the statement said.

The business operations of the company have continued as normal, according to the statement.

CRCC will nominate a suitable candidate to replace Chen at the earliest opportunity in accordance with the company’s internal regulations, and a separate announcement will be published in due course, the statement added.

An inspection work on the CRCC was officially launched by the second inspection group of the Party Committee of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission of the State Council (SASAC) starting from June 15, and the inspection work was completed on August 15, media reported.

The death of the CRCC chairman may be unrelated to the inspection group, but rather was due to personal reasons, and the relevant information will be subject to external disclosure by the CRCC when the time comes, the National Business Daily reported on Tuesday, citing an unidentified person within the inspection group.

Chen, 58, had been CRCC’s chairman since June 2018. He was also a delegate to the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.
