An avid gamer in Mianyang, Southwest China's Sichuan Province, was reluctant to evacuate when local police came to his house while he was in the middle of a game, despite the threat of severe flooding caused by heavy rains, media reported on Monday.
Despite being warned of the potential danger, the man remained unmoved and continued with his game, saying that "I cannot betray my teammates and leave in the middle of a game," according to a video provided by the police.
He reluctantly put aside his beloved game and followed the police to shelter only after they insisted several times that he follow them.
Netizens had divided opinions about the gamer, with some admiring his "heroic" spirit of "never abandoning your teammates in a game" even in times of adversity, while others criticized him for his capriciousness.
"The story teaches us that we shouldn't report teammates for escaping that easily, as he may be busy fleeing from a terrible disaster," one comment reads.
Mianyang police have been evacuating local residents in low-lying areas in emergency operations recently, after several days of torrential rains. The devastating floods have already destroyed river embankments.
