Seven old couples aged over 80 had a special wedding ceremony in a cemetery in Kunming, Southwest China's Yunnan Province, Pear Video reported on Monday.

The aim of the event, according to the organizer, was to change the public's perception of cemeteries.

"We want to prove that the cemetery is not a chilly, terrifying place," the organizer said, adding that it also reminded people to cherish and respect life.

The couples who took part in the ceremony have all been married for more than 60 years.

Living conditions back when they were young did not allow them to wear suits or wedding dresses, so they decided to compensate for it on this special event.

All they did back then was simply gather around a dinner table and announce their marriage to their friends and relatives, one couple who had been married for 63 years recalled, media reported.

However, the event has triggered a wave of controversy among netizens.

Some wondered if it is necessary to conquer such mental obstacles, and if it is disrespectful to the dead.

Others gave their blessings to these lifelong companions, who have decided to revisit their commitments to each other that they made 60 years ago.
