A man in Huzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province, has donated blood for the 100th time as a special birthday gift for himself as he turned 37, People's Daily reported on Monday. The man, surnamed Lü, said he has been donating blood for the last 17 years.
Lü is a staff member of the Central Blood Station in Huzhou, and has been giving blood without asking for any payment or compensation since the age of 20, when he was still at college.
Lü has donated a total of 40,000 milliliters in blood, which is equivalent to six to seven transfusions.
"I did not realize that I had donated blood 100 times, and I will continue to do so until my physical condition does not allow me to," he said.
Some netizens on China's Twitter-like Sina Weibo expressed their appreciation to Lü, saying that he inspired them to celebrate their birthdays in a more meaningful way.
