Favorites outperformed by teammates at Water Cube

China dominated the FINA Diving World Series again at the Water Cube in Beijing by winning all 10 gold medals, though the home favorites of the 10-meter platform were overshadowed by teammates on Sunday.

In a buildup to the Rio Olympic Games, men's reigning world champion Qiu Bo was outperformed by teammate Chen Aisen, who won the event with 572.40 points, and Chen's rise was deemed as a threat to Qiu's reign. The 20-year-old Chen placed second at a Rio Olympic test event in February where Qiu won a FINA World Cup title.

"It's unbelievable and very pleasing," Chen said after defeating Qiu. "Finally, I outperformed him."

Qiu, who won gold three consecutive times in the men's 10-meter platform at FINA World Championships, said the result is beyond his expectations.

"I think I'm in fine condition but I need to fix some of my moves during the dives," Qiu said, adding, "I don't want to single out Chen as a rival, we are teammates."

Qiu survived a disastrous dive in the semifinal earlier on Sunday, netting only 47.25 points.

"I have to make some changes [after a bad dive], if I'm not able to do that, an Olympic medal will be unreachable," Qiu said.

Qiu was the silver medalist at the 2012 Olympic Games. The other two on the podium in London 2012, David Boudia of the US and Thomas Daley of Britain, placed sixth and fourth, respectively, on Sunday. Russia's Victor Minibaev took the bronze.

In the women's 10-meter platform, hot prospect Ren Xi was outpointed by Si Yajie, who won the 2013 FINA World Championships in Barcelona at the age of 14. Australia's Melissa Wu took third.

"I'm happy at today's results, it's my first time competing at the Water Cube," Si said, who believes her consistency is more important than improving her dive difficulty.

Ren, 15, said she needs to intensify her training for a better result. She vows to win gold at a World Series event later in Kazan, where she was defeated by North Korea's Kim Kuk-hyang at last year's FINA World Championships.

China's diving team director Zhou Jihong said she is satisfied with the team's performance though the team is "hit by fatigue" after competing in Rio at the end of February, but ruled out the World Series as a less important competition.

"The athletes always want to deliver their best to the audience," said Zhou. "From these competitions the divers can learn what they need to improve on, as well as on the level of the competition."

The World Series will take place in Dubai Thursday and Winsor in April before heading to the finale in Kazan.
