Editor's Note:
Shanghai’s new garbage-sorting regulation was effective from July 1, 2019, which indicates that garbage-sorting in accordance with the specified guidelines is a law now. The move came into implementation after advocating it for 20 years in the city. Spot inspections were carried out by law enforcement officers in various hotels and malls around Jing’an Temple in downtown Shanghai. Swissotel Grand Shanghai, a five-star hotel received the first notice of rectification from the law enforcement team. Following further checks at Crystal Galleria Shopping Center and Shanghai Yueyang Square, more notices of rectification were issued because of irregular garbage sorting. If these units don’t rectify the issue to meet the laid standards, they will face a fine up to 5000 yuan ($729.92).
