Editor's Note:
Khunjerab Port is the only land port linking China and Pakistan. It is located at about 5,100 meters above sea level in the territory of the Taxkorgan Tajik Autonomous County in Northwest China’s Xinjiang region.

The Global Times visited the port during its second temporary opening this year which lasted 12 days between January 30 and February 10. The opening was made at Pakistan’s request to facilitate customs clearance for needed supplies. The first opening was between January 19 and 20.

Trucks loaded with materials such as groceries, auto parts, polyester fiber and clothing drove away from the port to Sost Dry Port in Pakistan’s Gilgit-Baltistan region. The two temporary openings have facilitated 128 cross-border personnel visits, 328 vehicles' passes and more than 6,000 tons of goods exportation.

Because of the cold weather and lack of oxygen at the high altitude of 5,000 meters, Khunjerab Port is generally open from April 1 to November 30 every year, and remains closed from December 1 to March 31 of the following year.

In 2023, Khunjerab Port is applying to operate and open throughout the year without closure, the foreign affairs office of the Kashgar prefecture in Xinjiang told Global Times. If the application is approved by the country, it would largely drive up cross-border trade and business in the post COVID-19 era. Photos: Liu Caiyu/GT
