Editor's Note:
Recently, Zhang Chongxiu's photography exhibition on the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53) opened at the Military Museum of the Chinese People's Revolution in Beijing, showcasing more than 120 battlefield photography works taken by Zhang Chongxiu during the war and some physical exhibits.
Zhang Chongxiu, a recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award in Photography from the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, was born in Chao County (now Chaohu) in East China's Anhui Province. In 1942, he joined the New Fourth Army and participated in battles such as the Huaihai Campaign, the Battle of Jinan, and the Crossing Yangtze River Campaign.
During the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, Zhang served as the head of the Political Department Photography Group of the 9th Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army, mainly participating in frontline photography during the second and fifth campaigns. Whether it was the icy shores of Changjin Lake or the perilous Zhaoyang River, he carried his camera and charged into the line of fire with his comrades, capturing the heroic images of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army's perseverance, fierce combat, and life-or-death struggles with astonishing determination, extraordinary courage, and skilled photography techniques. These precious visual archives have preserved the history of the Chinese soldiers’ military struggles, where "the few defeated the many." Photos: Li Hao/GT
