On April 16, 2024, research fellows at the Steady High Magnetic Field Facility at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory, part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Hefei, Anhui Province, achieved a groundbreaking feat. Chinese scientists produced a steady magnetic field of 452,200 gauss, or 45.22 tesla, surpassing the previous world record set by the US nearly 23 years ago. This achievement marks the creation of the highest steady magnetic field by a working magnet in the world.
"This demonstrates China's capability to provide robust support for scientific exploration of the physical world," said Kuang Guangli, director of the laboratory.
Currently, there are five major laboratories dedicated to steady high magnetic fields globally, located in the US, France, the Netherlands, Japan, and China. These facilities create extreme experimental conditions essential for the study of physical science and contribute significantly to major scientific discoveries, Kuang added. (Photos: Chen Tao/GT)
