Liu Renfu, a young man with a severe spinal deformity, has broken free from his "folded life," thanks to a doctor in Chengdu, capital of Southwest China's Sichuan Province.
Liu has a spinal deformity that made him tilt forward at 153 degrees. He was miserable and had lost confidence in his life, before meeting Liang Yijian, director of the orthopedics at the Third People's Hospital of Chengdu.
Against the patient's impoverished family background and high risk of surgery, the doctor called for entrepreneurs to donate more than 100,000 yuan ($14,900) for Liu's surgery.
"A spinal deformity leads to delayed growth and heart dysfunctions in patients. The defect puts a negative influence on development of the brain, even costing their lives," a Beijing-based doctor told the Global Times on Sunday.
After undergoing the risky and complicated surgery and months of treatments Liu is able to walk without a bent back.
"I feel like I have been reborn," Liu said.
