A superstitious woman, who threw coins into a jet engine in a delusionary prayer for a safe flight, will spend the next 10 days in detention.

Police in Hohhot, North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, detained the 66-year-old woman, who had thrown six coins into the engine causing a long flight delay, Tianjin Airlines announced on Sina Weibo on Tuesday.

Passengers on flight GS6681 to Chifeng were transfered to another plane, which took off two hours later.

The incident triggered heated discussion on social media. "Such superstitious acts can spread among the public just like infectious diseases," wrote a netizen, noting there have been similar cases. Many netizens said the woman was punished too lightly.

An analyst named "Huigeshushu" commented Thursday in an article that the current punishment is not enough to eradicate such behavior as many people still have deep-rooted superstitious thinking.
