The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Thursday condemned US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's speech as full of political lies and ideological bigotry after Pompeo distorted China's treatment of Uygurs as "stain of the century."
Geng Shuang, spokesperson of the ministry, said at a press conference on Thursday that the China-related content in the so-called Country Reports on Human Rights Practices for 2019 published by the US on Wednesday ignores facts and confounds right with wrong, in response to questions raised by the Global Times reporter.
"The report and Pompeo's speech are full of political lies and ideological bias, which we firmly oppose," Geng noted.
Geng said that the Chinese government has always attached great importance to protecting and promoting human rights. Since the founding of the People's Republic of China, great achievements have been made in the cause of human rights, and the human rights situation in the country is at its best in history, which is universally recognized by the international community, he said.
"This is not something that someone in the US saying a few words or publishing such report can denigrate."
Geng stressed that Xinjiang affairs are purely China's internal affairs, which cannot be interfered by any external force.
The Chinese government has taken counter-terrorism and de-radicalization measures in Xinjiang in accordance with the law, which have won the support of its people of all ethnic groups and received high recognition and positive comments from the international community, Geng noted.
"We urge the US side to reflect on, correct its mistakes and stop interfering in China's internal affairs by using human rights issues."
