A recently released detainee in Zhengzhou, Central China's Henan Province, was shocked to find that she had a new credit card opened in her name, which left her 20,000 yuan ($2,900) in debt to the bank, while she was serving time in prison, reported The Paper on Tuesday.
The woman, surnamed Li, has recently been prosecuted by a local bank for late credit card payments worth 20,000 yuan, and said she has no clue about how it has happened.
"Who opened the credit card? How did it get approved?" Li asked, demanding that the bank explain how her identity was stolen.
Even worse, Li also found that her old deposit card from the same bank had been frozen and the 1,500 yuan ($215) in the card had been taken away.
The bank finally agreed to give back the money taken from Li's card but still offered no immediate solution to the credit card dispute.
A bank staff said the case is under investigation and suggested Li go through legal process to solve the case.
