China's production and sales of new energy vehicles (NEVs) will reach more than 10 million units during the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), according to a report released Wednesday by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

China has become the country with the largest number of new energy vehicles and the largest scale of charging facilities in the world.

From 2016 to May 2020, China sold 4.04 million units of NEVs including 3.24 million pure electric vehicles, 790,000 plug-in hybrid vehicles, and 4,600 fuel cell vehicles, ranking first in the world, said the report citing data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.

Of the 4.04 million units, passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles are 3.29 million units and 750,000 units, respectively.

From 2016 to 2019, China has the largest NEV market in the world: 44.8 percent, 49.4 percent, 54.6 percent and 50.5 percent, respectively, said the report.

China has the world's largest vehicle production capacity. During the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020), China is expected to produce nearly 5 million NEVs, of which about 80 percent are pure electric vehicles, and 19 percent are plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Of the 5 million NEVs, passenger vehicles represent about 82 percent and commercial vehicles account for 18 percent, said the report.

In 2019, China produced 1.24 million new energy vehicles, of which 1.02 million are pure electric vehicles.

By 2019, China has 3.597 million units of NEVs, accounting for 48 percent of the world's NEV market.

Among them, the number of passenger vehicles is 3.34 million and that of commercial vehicles is 247,000, accounting for 46.7 percent and 65.5 percent of the global market respectively.

By 2019, China has 516,000 public charging piles including 215,000 fast charging and 301,000 slow charging piles, with the world's largest charging network, said the report.

The sales of passenger cars in China will see a 15 percent year-on-year growth in 2021, said the State Information Center Wednesday.
