Tesla has started delivering made-in-China Model Ys as of Monday, a step which the company said that marked a "brand new stage" for the US electric car maker's development in China.
According to information Tesla provided to the Global Times, Tesla began delivering China-made Model Y cars in three Tesla showrooms in Shanghai. It is the second electric car that Tesla had produced and launched on the Chinese mainland markets after it established a manufacturing plant in suburban Shanghai to churn out new-energy vehicles (NEV).
Tesla also confirmed that it would start delivering made-in-China Model Y cars in other Chinese cities.
Several Tesla staffs had told the Global Times earlier that sale of Model Y cars had exploded in their store, which are generally located in shopping centers.
Tesla also revealed that it would accelerate investment in the mainland market. It is planning to invest 42 million yuan ($6.5 million) in establishing a factory that manufactures and researches superchargers. The factory will start production in the first quarter of 2021 and plans to produce 10,000 superchargers annually within its first few years of operation.
