The new electoral system will help implement the principle of “patriots governing Hong Kong” and provide a solid institutional guarantee for the long-term peace and stability of Hong Kong, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday, noting that the reform reflects the common will of all Chinese people. 

After a two-day meeting of the Standing Committee of National People’s Congress and rounds of discussions, Chinese top lawmakers have unanimously approved the Hong Kong electoral reform plan, with revised measures for electing the Hong Kong chief executive and the formation of the Legislative Council, which is seen as another major step in tackling the loopholes in the city’s governance structure. 

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday signed presidential orders to promulgate the Hong Kong electoral reform plan.

Hong Kong electoral reform aims to support the development of democracy in Hong Kong in line with its constitutional order, which will better reflect a balanced participation of local residents in political life and take the interests of various sectors into account, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson said. 

The new electoral system will further improve the city’s political and social environment, the rule of law and business environment, and usher in an even brighter future for Hong Kong's development, the spokesperson said. 

Hong Kong affairs are purely China's internal affairs. The Chinese government has the determination and confidence to safeguard China's sovereignty, security and development interests as well as Hong Kong's prosperity and stability. Any attempt to interfere in Hong Kong affairs or put pressure on China will never succeed, the spokesperson said.
