It is in line with the interests of the Myanmar people and the international society to support ASEAN to constructively participate in Myanmar’s domestic reconciliation process in the ASEAN way, and push for the easing and cooling down of the Myanmar situation, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at the high-level open debate held by the UN Security Council on Monday. 

The international community should respect and maintain ASEAN’s central position in regional cooperation, Wang said.

At the open debate, Wang also put forward the idea of “preventive diplomacy,” suggesting the UN and regional partnerships engage in dialogues to narrow differences and settle disputes. 

He insisted that hot international issues should be dealt with through political measures, while all parties should always respect the will and choice of the people of their own countries. Any mandatory action must be authorized by the UN Security Council, Wang stressed. 

Many regional hotspot issues will eventually be resolved through development, Wang continued. UN and regional organizations should promote peaceful development, and ensure timely support through capital and resources. 

The fundamental solution for regional disputes is the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which would improve people’s livelihood, increase job opportunities, and reduce development gaps. 

China has always supported the UN in strengthening cooperation with regional and sub-regional organizations, and China has been making active efforts in this regard, Wang said.

China’s strategic partnerships with regional organizations are based on the principle of joint contributions and shared benefits, and have never targeted any third party, Wang said at the UN.

China has established strategic partnerships with regional organizations such as the African Union, ASEAN and the Arab League, all of which uphold the principles of the UN Charter, and are committed to achieving win-win cooperation.

A considerable amount of the United Nations Peace and Development Trust Fund has been used to strengthen such ties, noted Wang, and China has also announced that it will donate 300,000 doses of COVID-19 vaccine to UN peacekeepers, with priority for those in African missions.
