The end of the English Premier League season is nigh - and that means it is time to think of the individual awards.

Take the team of the season. Some names pick themselves, others are the subject of more debate. Thankfully, football is a game of opinions and there is no shortage of pundits willing to speak up.

Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville have been in agreement in recent weeks when it comes to the European Super League but it was business as usual on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football as the pair picked their team of the season.

Both agreed on Manchester United's Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes, Manchester City's Ruben Dias, Kevin de Bruyne and Phil Foden, and Tottenham Hotspur's Harry Kane for the team of the season.

The pair also both agreed on Ruben Dias as their pick for player of the season and Phil Foden as young player of the season.

Carragher, who played central defense for much of his career, had praise for the Manchester City signing.

"I said on this show at the start of the season that if this signing didn't work, it would be the end of City and Pep. You might think that's a huge statement, but he was a 65 million pound defender.

"They never replaced Vincent Kompany and last season that was a huge blow for them but he has come in and been the best defender in the league - and for me the best player.

Carragher likened him to former Barcelona lynchpin Carlos Puyol, who was the rock on which Guardiola's all-conquering side were built.

"He's like Puyol. The amount of blocks he made in the Champions League game the other day, it reminded me of John Terry. Also, his leadership qualities for such a young player. To go into that big a team and look like the leader of the team, I think that's pretty special."

Neville agreed, likening him to EPL stars of the past.

"Dias has surprised me, dominating like he has for someone so young. I played with Jaap Stam, Gary Pallister, Steve Bruce, Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand... Dias is one of those who makes the rest of the team safe.

"The impact of the great center-back is not just what they do in terms of their own performance, they impact everybody else in that back four and the people in front of them. Dias is exceptional.

"At the start of the season I didn't think there was any way that City back four could win the league, so for him to do what he's done, he's been the most important player this season."

There was more agreement on Foden, starting with Carragher heaping praise on the youngster.

"He is a player who is classed more as a midfielder, but wide left is the position he has played for Pep and it's his actual performances there where you are thinking 'wow,'" Carragher said.

"He's not just a great player, we have lots of great players, but he is different - and not just in terms of being English, but in the Premier League."

Neville too has been blown away by Foden this season.

"When was the last time we saw an exceptional English talent like Phil Foden? Wayne Rooney? Foden is a once-in-a-generation type player, he's that good. He's unbelievable.

"Let's not forget, he's played at Manchester City, to get into that team, with that manager, you've got be something unbelievably special. Foden could be something outrageous in the coming years if he gets it right on and off the pitch."

There was disagreement elsewhere between the pair.

Carragher picked Aston Villa's Emi Martinez in goal while Neville opted for Chelsea's Edouard Mendy. Their defences differed, too. Neville plumped for Manchester United skipper Harry Maguire and City's Kyle Walker where Carragher chose West Ham United's Vladimir Coufal and Man City's John Stones.

In midfield, there was also a disagreement where Carragher thought Chelsea standout N'Golo Kante deserved a spot that Neville gave to Manchester City's Ilkay Gundogan.

When it came to the front line, Manchester United's Marcus Rashford pipped it for Neville over Spurs star Son Heung-min.

Carragher defended his choice of the South Korea skipper.

"I went for Son," the former Liverpool and England defender said, explaining that he chose him over Reds star Mohamed Salah.

"I was thinking about Mo Salah being the top goal scorer, but Son, I was thinking about goals and assists, Son has more than Salah combined.

"Obviously Salah takes penalties, but Kane is the penalty taker, so that's the reason for Son.

"Next to Son I've gone with Harry Kane, both of their numbers are brilliant considering they've played most of the season in a team which is defensive."

Kane and Son have been in devastating form together this season, surpassing the English Premier League record for the most deadly partnership of goals scored that are assisted by the other.

Neville said that he had changed his mind on Son in the last few months.

"I had Son in at one point, but over the last couple of months, and I love Son as a player, but he's disappointed me.

"I can't get that Carabao Cup final out of my head. Spurs were really disappointing and it's carried with me a little bit, he shouldn't do, because he's a brilliant player. An exceptional talent, but I changed him at the last minute."

Despite a midseason struggle, Son has returned a career-best 17 English Premier League goals so far this season. He has also provided 10 assists for his teammates, needing just one more to have a career best season as provider.

Son has also got the highest shot conversion rate of any player with more than 10 English Premier League goals this season, scoring with a quarter of his shots.

In February Son had even been tipped to get player of the season honors by former Spurs striker Peter Crouch.

"It's been such a strange season that no one player has dominated the rest. Jack Grealish has claims and Harry Kane was in a fine position before Christmas, but how long is he going to be out injured?" Crouch asked at the time

"At this stage, my vote would be for Son Heung-min. I absolutely love him and think he's improved again this season."

It's hard to disagree with that.
