Local police in Renqiu, North China’s Hebei Province reported that two students and one parent were injured in an attack at a local school on Monday morning and were sent to a hospital.
The report said the suspect surnamed Li, 30, who is from Suihua, Northeast China's Heilongjiang Province and lives in a village in Renqiu, was caught by police officers at the site.
One of the three injured was severely injured and the other two are in stable condition.
The attack happened at the Caiyi Middle school of Huabei Oilfield, said the report.
The report didn't mention the motivation for the attack.
The case is under investigation, said the report.
A worker at an auto repair shop 90 meters from the school said he heard a police siren at 8 or 9 am, and the school is now closed, according to a report by Chinese media outlets The Paper.
A video posted by another Chinese media outlet Xi’an Business Daily showed a man being taken away by police officers, with injured, bloody students in their uniforms lying on the ground. The media outlet cited a local police officer as saying that the suspect was suspected of being mentally ill.
Recent school attacks have sparked public concerns for student safety.
In late April, another suspect killed two and injured 16 in a knife attack at a kindergarten in the town of Xinfeng, South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, according to the police investigation. The police investigation revealed that the suspect is schizophrenic.
China's Ministry of Education has urged schools across the country to strengthen campus security to prevent offenders from entering, and to conduct blanket inspections and rectification to identify security loopholes.
