A large line dancing event kicked off in Hong Kong on Saturday to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Communist Party of China (CPC).

The event involved three major performances involving around 300 Hongkongers from various districts of the special administrative region.

The performance was organized by a line dance sport association in Hong Kong. This marks the first time that the particular dance was used in Hong Kong to celebrate the history of the CPC as well as represent how local communities are mobilizing to better the physical health of residents.

Tan Yaozong, a member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress who attended the event, told media that various celebrations were being held to mark the day all over the country, including Hong Kong, and that the city will become a more peaceful society and the general public will be able to work for the future of Hong Kong with a rational and pragmatic attitude under the leadership of the Chinese central government.

"Line dancing is not only a type of dance performance that is visually pleasing, but it is also a good sport that exercises one's body, as well as develops dancers' mental health when it comes to things such as teamwork… this performance form can bind people together, just like Hongkongers in Hong Kong are bound to people in the Chinese mainland," Xu, a line dancer in Beijing told the Global Times on Sunday.
